Samuel Coleridge once said, “Prose: words in their best order; poetry: the best words in the best order.” This beginning poetry class is intended to be a non-intimidating place that allows us to play with words, punctuation, space, ideas and anything else we can come up with. There will be no judgement, intimidation, or grading. Just fun and you may even discover something about yourself you never knew. Desire to laugh is not a necessity, but certainly a bonus!

    Facilitator – Ruthie Campbell

After teaching high school English for 30 years, Ruthie lives in retired bliss along with her husband, Nye. Now that she has no reason to hide from poetry, she finds she doesn’t find it as intimidating as she once did and wants to show other writers that poetry can be fun – and cathartic – and tear invoking – and hilarious. Join us for creative explorations – you just may surprise yourself – and each other!

Home is where our stories begin. This 4-part workshop is designed to help writers create fictional characters who are complex, compelling, and believable. We'll work with what I call “the family album,” a portrait of those people who shaped the worldview of each primary character in your story.

Throughout the four weeks, we will:

    1. Explore how family dynamics can influence a character's needs, goals, and fears.

    2. Understand how character development leads to plot.

3: See how a character's self-identifying statement can be used to generate conflict; and,

    4. Learn how a character's needs, goals, and fears can be used to create a meaningful resolution to the conflict.

This class will use a lot of visuals. It is best for writers who are not restricted to audio-only access.

    Facilitator: Zita Christian

Every creative pursuit in Zita Christian’s world can be filed under

the umbrella of storyteller. Writer, ritualist, podcaster, and

celebrant, Zita believes in the power of stories to change the

    world.

A spirit box is a container filled with energy that you intentionally create, tailored to your own purpose. You have the freedom to choose the type and combination of energy that resonates with you. I have three spirit boxes in my home: one for good standing, one for empathy, and one for family. Below is a list of items you’ll need to create your own:

    What You’ll Need:

    • A quiet space where you can light candles and meditate
    • 6 candles
    • A piece of paper (I recommend parchment paper)
    • A red pen
    • A box
    • Three small trinkets that represent your intention

    Instructions:

Before our gathering, take some time to choose the energy or energies that you’d like to focus on. Then, using the red pen, write the following on your piece of paper:

    1. Three short paragraphs outlining your intention.
    2. Three sentences summarizing your intention.
    3. Around the edges of the paper, in a clockwise direction, jot down any additional thoughts or feelings you have about your intention.

This will help set the stage for your spirit box and the energy you wish to create.

    Hello,

I have a new painting for us to create together. This is a three part painting. Each section takes about an hour to complete, so we will be painting this over three gatherings.

Below is the list of supplies I will be using:

    • Stretched canvas - 9x12 or smaller works well for this painting.
    • Acrylic paints - Prussian Blue, Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow medium hue, Mars Black, Magenta and Winsor Violet. Feel free to substitute colors if you like.
    • Brushes - a large flat brush for spreading, a smaller flat brush for details and a small round brush for the moon.
    • 1 round sticker - when removed it will reveal your full moon
    • A toothbrush with soft bristles for the stars
    • Paper towels
    • 2 cups of water for rinsing brushes

I look forward to painting with you!

    Meet the artist:

I am a creative person who focuses on the beauty of life. I was always interested in art but did not start drawing or painting until my daughters were tots. At the age of two my eldest asked me to draw a flower so I picked up a colored pencil and drew a darling viola. "OMG," I thought, "I can draw!" From those colored pencil flowers I moved to watercolor, then acrylic, then oils and now back to acrylic. Over the years I have painted a few commissions, gifts for friends and family, and memories for myself. I have a large painting in my bedroom that commemorates a magical raven encounter in the forest.

When Kaye asked what I can contribute to CAW I instantly thought of a painting session. I have seen them done online before and while it is not the same as in person, I think it will still be great fun.

    Will you join me?
